Why don’t they learn English?

Standard

This is going to be an immigration post written from A white American’s point of view.  Now that my cred is screwed I’m going to write my peace.  I’m going to be writing legal and illegal immigration why it doesn’t bother me to much.  i don’t expect to change minds.

The fist thing I’m going to write about is “Why don’t they speak English?”  .  Some people believe it should be mandatory for people to learn English to get citizenship.  That would make sence except one minor thing, English isn’t America’s official language.  The US doesn’t have one.  There are many movements to change that,  Some of these have succeeded on a state level.  I admit it makes sense to conduct all proceedings in on language, definitely more efficient.  I have no problems with people learning English, It just doesn’t bother me when I hear other languages(usually Spanish).  My mom however works in retail, I’m sure I would feel the same.  Fortunately, their kids usually know English and are able to translate.  That written down I do have a knee jerk reaction to the question.  That is, Why don’t you learn – insert indigenous language here”.  It might be kind of fun if it’s not all ready extinct.

I just found out that there are recent anti legal immigration groups, I know slow.  Their main platform appears to be jobs, understandable there aren’t as much as there should be.  “Let’s reduce mass immigration and save jobs for Americans,” Valid point. In fact that’s what they always say in their propaganda. It would be true if education was more valued in the states. That would mean that there would be enough Americans to fill the positions .  But there aren’t enough skilled Americans yet so workers are imported.

Maybe that’s why college is so expensive.

Instead of complaining about people doing a less violent version of what our ancestors did, maybe we should be holding ourselves to a higher standard so we can compete.

More to come

Racism and me

Standard

Watching a documentary called “The Angry Eye”  it showed what happened when you take away a person’s privilege to be ignorant. Wow, spine tingling.  It made me think, as it was supposed to.  I’m not going to say I don’t discriminate, that I’m not racist, I have my moments.  We all do.

I don’t want to feel those feelings but they’ve been taught for so long that they still creep up, It’s natural, The movie brought back some memories and feelings too.  For example, “I don’t see color.”  I hear that and I want to throw something, unless it’s on the Colbert Report.   It’s like they don’t even notice the irony of what they said.  Personally, I see color, I’m not afraid to admit it.  I practically glow in the dark, so it’s not to hard to see when someone is darker than me, even most white people are darker than me .  When it comes down to it, though, I don’t care how dark you, I guess I’m supposed to, buuuut, I don’t.

When I was younger I watched the Tyra Banks Show.  I loved the episodes that took on serious issues.  Many times it was about race, Like how different ethnic groups are treated.  sometimes it was about men and women who hated others from the same ethnic group as them.  That’s right, they convinced themselves that other people where superior to their own.  Hitler would be proud.

I was confused, what was wrong with dark skin and curly hair?  I still think those features are beautiful.  I believe this would be this white privilege I unwittingly grew up with.  I am not ashamed of this view, now that I’m older, I get it though.

I watch tv, guess who’s not equally represented?  People of color, for one, when someone is shown they are usually Light skinned, lightened, straight hair, and if they’re a dude they look suspiciously like a stereotypical hood rat. I have nothing against people who chose to make themselves up like that, I just think that variety would be nice.  Since everything is pretty uniform the next step is to view people who don’t fit the mold as ugly.

Then they brought up reverse racism   I couldn’t help but think,’ why would the opposite of racism be bad?..  I listened to the description and was like, wait,, what?  That’s racism!   Yes, it’s directed towards white people, and there are more  excuses to justify it, but it is still raceism.  I get why it’s “reverse racism” though. Most of the time when we hear of racism it’s a white supremacist going on about crap the people they blame have no control.  So I guess it’s the reverse of that. Heres the thing, bigot is still a bigot.

A Letter to the people who think it’s our job to prevent our rapes.

Standard

I saw a picture of Facebook of a woman holding a sign.  It said, “We need feminism because we live in a culture that says don’t get raped instead of don’t rape.”  That didn’t bother me, it is true after all as evidenced by every rape trail ever.  What bothered me was some of the responses.

They usually started out as “Rape is bad but”….

Suddenly the sign was radical feminist whining.  Then the survivor blaming, “women shouldn’t but themselves into a situation to be raped.” A good point except for one tiny detail.

How?

Where are we supposed to go?

Men, woman, intersex people, and children are usually attacked by people the know, so that leaves out home or a friend’s house.  Can’t hang out in a crowd in hopes it would deter an attacker, human nature makes people reluctant to help and it could lead to getting gang raped.  Not dress provocatively?  Women in Burqas have been raped so completely covering ourselves won’t work neither do the blankets people used to cover themselves while they’re sleeping.

Certain actions do reduce the chances of attack but it’s ALWAYS there.  No where is safe well almost nowhere, most of can’t afford to live alone in the void of space.  Since that’s the case the only thing we can do is enjoy ourselves and, should we come in contact with a predator, hope we have what it takes to be a survivor.

So, unless you guys are going to pay for space travel, you can kiss my ass.  I’m living my life .

Okay,I know I don’t have a save the world complex or and urge to make up for being “white”, there is just some stuff I don’t like.  Bullies, for one, not because it is now cool to be anti-bully but because I had to put up with them in school.  Feminism, not because I hate men but because I’ve been discriminated against for being female.  Speaking out against rape and sexual assault, This was also brought on by experience.  Speaking out against animal abuse, this is because animals have saved me on more than one occasion.

Bullying, to me takes multiple forms.  Taking away the rights of another in how I define it and it is a form of terrorism.  There is a reason children are too afraid to go to school.  It can change the very make up of a person’s brain, causing them to be more likely to commit suicide.  Examples of bullies other than the ones I just sort of mentioned, are those violently opposed of something.  Not so much their opposition but the way they express it.  Certain people need not crash a soldiers funeral, they need not rape to attempt change a person’s sexuality, ect.  When it comes down to it these people are bullies

It is these bullies who triggered feminism.  To me feminism is women who know that they are equal to men and demand  that equality.  My interest was encouraged by a college text-book. Apparently, on average, a college educated person makes more money.  What got to me was the fact that even though a woman was making more money but still only half that as men.  For the same work.  In fact a recent bill was supposed to eliminate that gap but it was blocked. There are more laws to regulate a woman’s body then a man’s, birth control for example.  This is not right.

Sexual assault is  also a tool used by bullies.  This is an experience that happens to men, women, intersexed, young, old, rich, poor.  It even happened to me once, in front of witnesses, one who laughed at me and the other who tried to ignore it.  I can identify how people feel  and no one should feel that.  It is something I will always speak out against as it is preventable.  It will always happen but it can be reduced through education and actually punishing the idiots that do it.  They are not entitled and there are better ways to deal with stress.

Animal Abuse sometimes makes me feel like a hypocrite in some cases, like cock-fighting.  I eat chicken and more often than not these birds are kept in horrible living condition, it’s just as inhumane and cock-fighting.  But I won’t stop, if it wasn’t for animals I’d be dead of suicide.  I owe them a debt of gratitude, we all do. I definitely wasn’t the one pulling plows, killing pests, offering companionship, letting  people take my milk, or helping our ancestors hunt.

Lastly is mental illness, something I know a lot about having been diagnosed with clinical depression when I was ten.  Mental illness is usually the butt of a joke.  It’s something people try to ignore by self medicating, usually with drugs, due to denial.  It is nothing to be ashamed, it is not a sign of weakness, contagious, or uncontrollable.  I will be writing on all this.
