Toshidama Japanese Prints

ImageThe current show at the Toshidama Gallery has three sheets from the peerless series of woodblock prints A Comparison of the Ogura One Hundred Poets of 1847. This series of 100 prints is one of the outstanding achievements of woodblock printing in Japan in the nineteenth century. Commissioned by the publisher Ibaya Senzaburo in 1845, the series is the joint work of Kuniyoshi, Hiroshige and Kunisada: the three most exceptional woodblock print artists of the age. All of the prints in this series are beautifully composed, drawn and printed and they exhibit a remarkable conformity of style. The edition was one in a long line of anthologies which gathered together the canon of great poetry going back to the eighth century. Whilst there had been previous attempts by artists to anthologise and illustrate the great poems, notably by Hokusai, and Kuniyoshi himself, this was the first major work to be…

Conflict pt 1

Standard

A bunch of people may think this is anti Semitic but I can honestly say i don’t care. I’m going to talk about the Israel/Palestinian conflict. But first, History!

In 1917 the Balfour Declaration was sent to Baron Rothschild by Arthur Balfour informing him of the British Government’s support of a Jewish state in the all ready inhabited Palestine region, then a British colony. The people already living in the region weren’t particularly happy about it unless they were Zionists, who believe they are entitled to those lands because they are Jewish.
In 1945 American President Franklin D. Roosevelt reassured the inhabitants of Palestine that the US would not interfere without consulting The Palestinians, both Jewish and Muslim(not sure about Christians, pagans and Atheists were on the down low) By that time The British were now opposed to a Jewish state and unregulated refugees the the region.
1946 Harry Truman establishes a committee lead by Henry F. Grady to work with a British committee. Truman recommended 100,000 refugees be allowed into the colony and approved of a Jewish state.
1947 The UN decided on a partition Palestine in the Resolution 181 (also known as the Partition Resolution)to be enacted in 1948
1948 the Jewish state is established and recognized by the West and Palestine is separated from itself with Jerusalem in international control for awhile.

Happy memorial day.

Watching CNN talking about that idiot who murdered 6 people.  They kept pointing out he got counseling but they are forgetting one minor thing.  Just because someone goes to counseling doesn’t mean they’re getting counseling. It’s not hard to pay lip-service until the session is over and blow off what they could have learned. Especially if you blame everyone else for your problems.

People, including patients, seem to think medication and/or counseling will fix a person, but that’s not how it works  There is no cure all to treating mental disorders but what we do have doesn’t work unless the patient works. The medications are supposed to calm the symptoms enough to allow the person to utilize the coping skills that are supposed to be learned in therapy.

Heathenism’s battle with white supremacists

CNN Belief Blog

Opinion by Joshua Rood, special to CNN

(CNN) — The word “heathen” is a very old one that once meant “heath dweller” or a person who lives out in the wild.

Eventually, when Christianity came into Northern Europe, it came to mean “one who still worships the old gods.” It still means that in some parts of the world, like Iceland, where it also goes by the name Ásatrú (“belief in the Aesir”).

Aesir is just a very old word for the traditional gods of Scandinavia. You’ve probably heard of some of these gods: Odin, Thor, Freyr and Freyja.

What you might not know is that many traditions, stories and celebrations have never gone away.

These can be as simple as the Scandinavian belief in vaettir (nature spirits) or as complex as the poems and songs about the Aesi that were written and are still sung and performed in…

Dances With Fat

fight back Lindsey Averill is in the process of co-creating the documentary “Fattitude:  A Body Positive Documentary” which the kickstarter page describes as “A feature-length documentary that exposes how popular culture fosters fat prejudice, and then offers an alternative way of thinking.”  She is working to crowdfund the project and has created the Kickstarter and a trailer on YouTube and then, she told me, this happened:

It all started when I reported a YouTube user, “GODBLESSADOLFHITLER” for copyright for posting my trailer verbatim on his youtube channel – I also reported another video of his that featured my film and horrible images of 9/11 hate speech, etc. YouTube pulled down his videos and he and his followers began to torture me. They were calling our house till I changed our number. They are now calling my family, my husband’s business and the have collected all the information on my interviewees and posted…
